If it gives pleasure or comfort, it is Art; if it instructs and enlightens, it is Art; if it confuses, is clever or clarifies, it is Art. The platform or delivery system, be it literary, culinary, educational, 2D, 3D, digital, electronic, FaceBook, childbirth, or of the plastic “arts” is the only thing that differentiates one from the other. Still, each, nonetheless, is to be respected and regarded as valuable vehicles of experience or existence.
— Carl Heyward (excerpt from Tapas K. Ray's The Antonym Webzine's article below)

Carl Heyward is NEA Fellow and grant recipient, former MFA instructor at SF Academy of Art University, arts writer and founder of Global Art Project, a mixed-media collaborative cooperative with a membership in 12 countries. He has exhibited at Room Art Gallery, Mill Valley, The Fourth Wall Gallery in Oakland, CA, artist-in-residence at The Schools of The Sacred Heart at The Flood Mansion, San Francisco, and continues to exhibit internationally: Kranz, Slovenia; Mazatlan, Mexico; Venice, Italy; and Ghent, Belgium, in 2017-2019. His work is in collections held by SF-MOMA, NY-MOMA, Yale University Art Library, the National Gallery of Australia, Wellsely Art Library and the Brooklyn Museum. He is associated with Jennifer Perlmutter Gallery, CA; 10dence Gallery, Holland, Galerie Sobo Bade, Senegal and Gallerie Renee Marie, CA, East Village Art View Gallery, NYC

Jim Jordan: Recollections

A Random Selection

Reception: September 29, 2024

11 am-4 pm

Growing up as the son of an illustrator, I was immersed in art from an early age, which undoubtedly influenced my creative path. I formally studied art and design at the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts), earning a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design in 1962.

My career spanned various corporations, including Westinghouse and Corning Glass, and design consultancies like Walter Landor. I also taught at Hong Kong Polytechnic and earned an MBA from Boston University. Family is my greatest joy, with five children and three grandchildren marking significant life milestones. Although my undergraduate studies included fine arts, I initially focused on design and only revisited fine art later.

After retiring, I attended classes at DVC, earning certificates in painting/drawing and ceramics. The joy of creating art has been enhanced by the incredible artists I've met. At Studio 55, I discovered a well-equipped studio and a supportive community of artists, providing a sense of purpose and connection—especially vital during the pandemic.

If you love the luminosity and overall effects of oil paint and cold wax but are leery of using oil-based mediums and paints, this class is for you!

I have been painting with oil and cold wax for over six years. I was a member of Jerry McLaughlin and Rebecca Crowell’s Cold Wax Academy for three years and during that time, I learned a bunch about creating with oil and cold wax. Always open to exploring other mediums, though, I was curious about using acrylic paint with wax so I gave it a try and I found that, although the response of the materials is different, I could achieve basically the same effects with acrylic paint and wax as I could with oils. Brilliant!

This class is designed for both beginners and experienced artists. We will be using various materials to achieve textured layers, luminous effects,  and interesting surfaces. We will spend the morning working on 300# watercolor paper, experimenting with materials, tools, and layering, and then in the afternoon, we will create a painting on a cradled wood panel. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination, so come along and discover this versatile and exciting way of working with acrylic paint!

Carl Heyward’s PUSH/PRACTICE WORKSHOP

Sunday, March 17, 2023 (12 pm - 3 pm)

If it gives pleasure or comfort, it is Art; if it instructs and enlightens, it is Art; if it confuses, is clever or clarifies, it is Art. The platform or delivery system, be it literary, culinary, educational, 2D, 3D, digital, electronic, FaceBook, childbirth, or of the plastic “arts” is the only thing that differentiates one from the other. Still, each, nonetheless, is to be respected and regarded as valuable vehicles of experience or existence.

THIS IS A MIXED MEDIA MASTER WORKSHOP

Pushing Practice While Identifying and Breaking Habitual Modes of Working: Paying attention to what’s actually happening with materials; how they interact and evolve; how ideas present themselves in various ways in conjunction with this process often supersedes  expectation and offers opportunities for broader, richer, more personal expression. These are a few of the goals presented in The Carl Heyward Mixed-Media Workshops, achieved through the suspension of self-judgement, ordering creativity and analysis to their appropriate times and places; discovering confidence in problem resolution; to take risks.

Explore the creative possibilities of “the materials at hand” which may include both traditional and non-traditional resources such as collage, painting, found materials, print and mark making; even discards, in the true spirit of Mixed-Media Arts. Heyward’s mentoring process moves participants through a series of alternative print making, collage, painting and mixed-media exercises. These practices help students to break out of creative blocks and self-imposed barriers.

Heyward will be joined by award winning Japanese fiber artist Akiko Suzuki.

Diane Williams-Cold Wax Medium & Oil - The Language of Texture

Cold Wax Medium and Oil - The Language of Texture

Cold wax is a seductive medium that offers sumptous colors and texture. Oil paint is alive with it's own life force, or "chi". Combined with cold wax medium, oils take on a velvety, flat translucency. Cold away, the Language of Texture, is geared for the beginner to intermediate artist wanting to practice technique, and experience working with oil and cold wax. We meet for 2 days, (giving time for the paint to set up between meetings) so that we can continue with the same pieces. Cold wax takes patience. We will not be working with brushes. Instead we add color with scrapers (I like the messemeister silicone bowl scrapers available on Amazon.com). Bring soft brayers, small palette knives, oil paints (at least red, yellow blue, black and white), objects to create texture-such as chains, sticks, stencils, dish scrubbers etc. I will provide cold wax medium, gamsol, tissue paper, wax paper and objects to use for texture.

Cost: $350 for 2 days( including some supplies)
Dates: October 21 & 22
Time: 12 pm - 5 pm pacific time

Arlene Mornick-Introduction to Metal Clay

Arlene Mornick-Introduction to Metal Clay

One-day class: 10 am to 4 pm.  (students are to bring lunch for ½ hour break)

Fee: $220 This includes materials and the $25 studio fee.

Class is canceled due to limited enrollment. Contact hello@studio55martinez.com if you are interested in a class after the first of the year.

Metal clay is amazing - it starts as clay but fires into pure silver. You can form it with simple tools, even set stones in it, and fire it with a butane cooking torch or small kiln. When fired, the clay-like binders burn off as the pure silver molecules fuse together.

This class is designed for both beginning students and those seeking to refresh skills and learn new ones. During this in-depth orientation to Metal Clay students will create a pendant and a pair of earrings.. The initial project provides a foundation for learning thickness, rollout, texture, and carving techniques.

Beyond the basic skills required for this project, more advanced techniques will be taught including fold-forming moistened clay, setting small cabochons, drying, firing with torch and kiln, final finishing and polishing, and repairs before and after firing.

Students will learn to fire their projects with a butane torch – safe to do at home and if preferable a kiln.  Safety precautions and setup will be reviewed.  After firing manual polishing and finishing will be taught.

Techniques taught:

·         how to choose and condition metal clay

·         basic metal clay fabrication techniques

·         setting and firing stones in metal clay

·         torch firing metal clay

·         Kiln firing metal clay

·         Texture, fold forming, and carving techniques

·         Repairs and troubleshooting

·         Polishing after firing

MIRA’S MIXED MEDIA MASH UP!

This vibrant class explores abstraction and representation with multiple layers and multiple media techniques. Acrylic, watercolor,  Oil, cold wax, pigment sticks and collage converse on a variety of surfaces, emphasizing unity of design, texture and color.  We  work with a combination of both dry & wet media, including soft pastels, watercolor, oil paint, pigment sticks, charcoal, graphite and collage.  Acrylic media can serve as a base underpainting.  All imagery applicable.  Appropriate for continuing painters, who work toward developing a strong personal vocabulary.  The class will meet weekly from 10 am-1 pm for discussion, live demos, an opportunity to work in class and presentation of work. It is my hope that participants can exchange ideas and form a lively exchange.

This is an in-person workshop. Due to the pandemic, enrollment will be limited to 10 participants, wearing masks, and honoring social distancing. Mira has also requested that all participants be vaccinated in order to register.

FIGURE WORKSHOP

Saturday, (12pm - 3pm)

August 26, September 23, October 28, November 18, December 9, 2023

Let’s explore the cornerstone of the visual arts together. Life drawing brings exciting challenges and pleasures. This inspiring workshop consists of demonstrations, exercises, discussion, group critiques, and individual guidance. We will study the external and internal forces acting on the model’s poses while studying the different qualities of lines and the organization of forms. Over the course of the five sessions, we will also be exploring the use of color in our drawings.

Those new to life drawing will discover the joy that comes from describing life while forming a firm foundation on which to continue. More seasoned artists will find their art practice invigorated whether working in abstraction or object-oriented art. Together we will experience an exciting adventure into the thousand-year-old practice of describing ourselves.

Born in Chicago, Louise Victor received her Bachelor’s Degree from Northern Illinois University in 1973 and her Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 1977. Admirers of her artwork may be astonished to learn that she spent much of her early professional life as a commercial airline pilot. In fact, she was only the second woman in the world to qualify as “Captain” of Boeing 757/767 aircraft. Despite her demanding responsibilities, she managed to develop into an accomplished painter, draughtswoman, printmaker, bookmaker, and curator of art exhibitions. The drama and power of her dynamic artwork clearly reflect her mastery of flight—both in the air and of the spirit.

Cost: $100 for each day ($350 for all 5 dates)

Carl Heyward’s PUSH/PRACTICE WORKSHOP

Sunday, March 26, 2023 (12pm - 3pm)

If it gives pleasure or comfort, it is Art; if it instructs and enlightens, it is Art; if it confuses, is clever or clarifies, it is Art. The platform or delivery system, be it literary, culinary, educational, 2D, 3D, digital, electronic, FaceBook, childbirth, or of the plastic “arts” is the only thing that differentiates one from the other. Still, each, nonetheless, is to be respected and regarded as valuable vehicles of experience or existence.
— Carl Heyward (excerpt from Tapas K. Ray's The Antonym Webzine's article below)

Cold Wax and Ink

Yes, cold wax is not just for oil painters!  Get an overview of essential materials, substrates, and finishes. Explore techniques for applying alcohol inks, such as pouring, creating texture, lifting, masking, and more. You will learn how to make beautiful wax using inks, pastels, and additives.  Wax and inks create amazing textures and layers and bring an element of the unexpected to the painting process which is ideal for artists yearning to work more abstractly and intuitively.  Join me for this fun and one-of-a-kind workshop built from years of experimentation!

Colleen Gianatiempo is a mixed media artist, educator, and designer living and working in her new location in St. George, Utah (formerly the Bay Area). Colleen also teaches at Utah Tech University (St. George) in the College of the Arts.

Colleen’s journey as an artist began when she was 3 years old. She remembers cutting up family photos and drawing on walls with lipstick.  She learned early on that it’s possible to express the world around her in different ways and this is where Colleen’s passion began.

Colleen approaches life the same way she paints, by embracing the mystery, staying open to change, finding courage, honoring her intuition and trusting the journey.  This mindset has enabled her colorful, layered, contemporary, and distinctive style to emerge. Nature is her main influence as she always marvels about the design and beauty it beholds.  She works in many mediums and thrives most when she can experiment and discover new techniques. Colleen has been told that she is the Mary Poppins of art supplies!

In 2017, Colleen earned an MFA in Non-Figurative abstract painting from the Academy of Art in San Francisco.  As her formal art career developed, she has been privileged to be selected for several heart-themed public art projects including Hearts of San Francisco, The Heart of Sonoma, The American Backyard (city of Dublin, CA), Sea Lions of San Francisco, and Small Town with A Big Heart Mural in Martinez. This has given her the reputation as “the Artist with a Heart”.
